New York City FC 2016 MLS Schedule Revealed

Please be aware that a referee has the authority to have an injured player removed from the field

Here is an edited brief outline of the referee’s responsibility if a player is injured;

The referee’s responsibility in the case of any injury is simple: the player is removed from the field and not allowed to re-enter the match unless the referee is satisfied that the player can do so safely. The referee gets this authority from FIFA Law 5 “Duties and Powers of the Referee” and the USYSA policy on Head Injury.

FIFA Law 5 is clear as shown in Advice to Referees Section 5.8 which states:

“There is no higher priority for the officiating team than the health and safety of the players. Accordingly, referees must remain vigilant in any situation where an injury might have occurred to err on the side of protecting the safety of the player. This is particularly the case where an injury may have occurred to the head or neck of a player as a result of hard contact with anyone, whether or not as a result of a foul, or of contact with any hard surface. The first action to be taken immediately is to stop play and then to bring medical assistance onto the field.

Add to the above the requirements found in the USYSA referee policy addressing Head Injury in Steps 3 and 4:

Step 3:

“Players shall not re-enter competition, training, or partake in any activities for at least 24 hours. Even if there are no signs or symptoms after 15-20 min, activity should not be taken by the player.”

Step 4:

“A player diagnosed with a possible concussion may return to US Youth Soccer play only after release from a medical doctor or doctor of osteopathy specializing in concussion treatment and management.”

Clearly the USYSA policy requires a referee who suspects a player has suffered a head injury to remove the player and not allow them to re-enter.
